Before you is Volodymyrska Street, one of the oldest and most iconic streets in Kyiv. Its history goes back to the time of Rus’, and it may be the oldest street of all Kyivan Rus.
It begins at the citadel of Prince Volodymyr — the ancient fortified center on Old Kyiv Hill. Here, more than a thousand years ago, the life of the capital of Rus — Kyiv — was in full motion: princely palaces, churches, squares, and from here Prince Volodymyr began the Christianization of the state and built the first Christian church — the Church of the Tithes. Unfortunately, the church has not survived to our time, but near its foundations, you can explore its history and archaeological research in detail.
Further along, Volodymyrska Street stretches toward the Golden Gate, passing by the University and descending into the valley of the Lybid River. Along this road, the historical axis of Kyiv was formed — from the ancient citadel to the new urban quarters of the 19th century.
Today, Volodymyrska is an open-air chronicle. Along its length, you will find everything: archaeological sites and museums, universities and libraries, an old park, and architectural and historical monuments. It connects different eras like a thread running through the very heart of Kyiv — from the princely times to the present day.
