Vokzalna Metro Station

Vokzalna Metro Station

Vokzalna Metro Station is one of the oldest and best-known stations in Kyiv, located on the Sviatoshynsko–Brovarska Line between Polytechnic Institute and University stations. It was opened on 6 November 1960 as part of the first construction stage of the Kyiv Metro, becoming an important underground gateway to the capital, connecting the railway station with the city center.

Today, Vokzalna Metro Station is one of the busiest stations in the metro system, as thousands of passengers arriving in Kyiv by rail pass through it every day. It holds the status of a monument of local architectural significance, highlighting its cultural and historical value.

By design, it is a pylon three-vault station with an island platform. The three underground halls — the central one and two lateral ones — are connected by portal-like passages alternating with marble pylons that widen toward the top and are crowned with a massive cornice. The luxurious cladding of white and figured marble gives the station a ceremonial appearance, emphasizing its role as one of the city’s visual calling cards.

The artistic concept of the architects was to acquaint visitors to the capital with the history of Ukraine. In the central hall are large bronze medallions (by artist Oleksii Myzin), depicting significant events of the Ukrainian past.

The surface vestibule, designed by architects Anatolii Dobrovolskyi and Illia Maslenkov, is a two-storey structure directly adjoining the Suburban Terminal of Kyiv-Pasazhyrskyi Station. Nearby is also the “Starovokzalna” high-speed tram station, which makes Vokzalna Metro Station an important transportation hub of the city.
