The House with the Star

The House with the Star

Khreshchatyk 25 is one of the most distinctive buildings in central Kyiv, better known as the House with the Star. Built in 1953–1954 to a design by architect A. Dobrovolsky, the building consists of a central 15-storey block with a tower, spire, and star at the top, flanked by two nine-storey wings. Together with two symmetrical eleven-storey buildings, it forms a complete and ceremonial architectural ensemble of Khreshchatyk, which dominates the perspective toward Bohdan Khmelnytsky Street.

At the time of its construction, the building became the tallest structure in Kyiv and retained this status until 1981. In 1956, the Druzhba cinema opened on the ground floor, giving the building one of its popular nicknames.
