Termen Fountain

Termen Fountain

The Termen Fountain is one of five large cast-iron fountains installed in Kyiv at the end of the 19th century. The fountains were cast at the Kyiv Machine-Building Plant of Oleksii Terman in 1899–1901, based on a design by architect Oleksandr Shile and inspired by the well-known and fashionable Parisian fountain from the Place des Vosges. They were installed in squares and public gardens throughout Kyiv. These fountains became true adornments of Kyiv’s squares and boulevards, symbols of modernization and the formation of the European character of Kyiv in the late 19th century.

Today, the Termen Fountain, which has been preserved in the city center, is not only an architectural landmark but also a popular tourist attraction. Its cast-iron bowl with decorative ornaments and classical forms impresses with its refined craftsmanship, as such fountains combined both the practical function of supplying water and the aesthetic beauty of the urban environment.

According to a Kyiv legend, if you toss a coin into the fountain, you will surely return to Kyiv. For this reason, it has become a symbol of the city that always calls back its visitors and residents. For many, this spot is associated with fond memories, romance, and the special atmosphere of old Kyiv.
