Tereshchenkivska Street

Tereshchenkivska Street

Parallel to Volodymyrska Street, across Shevchenko Park, runs Tereshchenkivska Street — one of the most prestigious and fascinating streets in central Kyiv.

It received its name at the end of the 19th century in honor of Mykola Artemovych Tereshchenko — a prominent Ukrainian philanthropist, entrepreneur, and honorary citizen of Kyiv. Members of the Tereshchenko family made an enormous contribution to the development of the city: they financed the construction of schools, hospitals, churches, and above all — museums. It is no coincidence that today Tereshchenkivska is often called the Museum Street.

It is home to several major cultural institutions:

  • National Museum of Taras Shevchenko
  • The Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko National Museum of Arts
  • The Kyiv Art Gallery

At the beginning of the street, at the intersection with Bohdan Khmelnytsky Street, in the former buildings of the Pavlo Galagan College, you will find the National Museum of Ukrainian Literature — a center of Ukrainian written culture.

Closer to the opposite end of the street is the Museum of Nature, which preserves unique natural science collections — from minerals to rare animal species.

In addition to major museums, the street also houses cozy memorial apartments — where Ukrainian poets and writers lived and created: Pavlo Tychyna, Mykola Bazhan, and other notable cultural figures.

Tereshchenkivska Street is a true open-air museum gallery, where every building has its own history, and every façade bears the imprint of Kyiv’s cultural heritage — a heritage the city is proud of.
