Symon Petliura Street

Symon Petliura Street

Symon Petliura Street is a historic thoroughfare in the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kyiv, running from Taras Shevchenko Boulevard to Vokzalna Square. Planned as early as the 1830s, it was at its upper end that the Botanical Garden of the University named after academician Oleksandr Fomin was established — known to Kyiv residents as the “old” botanical garden, because it was the first of the city’s botanical gardens.

Throughout the 20th century, the street changed names several times, and in 2009 it received its current name in honor of Symon Petliura, the Chief Otaman of the Armed Forces of the Ukrainian People’s Republic. Today, it is a lively street with historic architecture, cafés, offices, and the entrance to the Botanical Garden — a place where Kyiv’s historical heritage merges with the rhythm of modern city life.
